Male infertility and how to conceive a baby

by Gisela Calderón 22/09/22

Male infertility affects 4 out of 10 people who experience problems conceiving, a situation that has multiple causes. However, with proper treatment, any of them can be overcome to achieve a baby.

Infertility, a much more common problem than you think

According to figures from the World Health Organization, there are around 186 million people in the world who have problems related to their fertility, however, few turn to specialists to find an alternative to help them conceive.

Fertility problems refer to the inability to father a child, even if you have had frequent and unprotected sexual intercourse for a year or more, and it is something that can affect both women and men.

Currently and for several years there have been different methods of Assisted Reproduction, which are intended to help people who face obstacles to have a baby; and as we said before, infertility is a problem for women and men.

There are a large number of causes that trigger male infertility problems, among the most common we can mention:

  • Varicocele: related to abnormal blood flow; is the swelling of the veins that drain the testicles, and is usually the most common reversible cause of male infertility.
  • Teratozoospermia: is the increase of abnormal spermatozoa in the man's semen.
  • Seminal infections: some infections can interfere with the production or health of sperm, or they can cause scars that block their passage.
  • Anejaculation: refers to the absence of ejaculation.
  • Asthenozoospermia: low mobility of sperm.
  • Azoospermia: lack of sperm in the ejaculate.
  • Diabetes mellitus: can cause testicular damage, reduced sperm count and insufficient quality.
  • Erectile dysfunction: inability to get and maintain an erection.
  • Vasectomy: Surgery in which the tubes of the scrotum are blocked or cut.

To this, the lifestyle is added, because without a doubt it is something that also impacts health. Therefore, the consumption of drugs, alcohol and tobacco can also be triggers of male infertility.

Assisted Reproduction technologies are designed to help conceive a baby, not only for women who have some problem or impediment to achieve it, but they are also designed for men who are going through a case of infertility.

In Vitro Fertilization is the treatment with the highest success rate, since it favors fertilization between the egg and the sperm externally, that is, in a laboratory, so that once the embryo is formed, it is transferred directly to the maternal womb.

However, when the sperm do not have sufficient quality to fertilize an egg and then give way to the formation of embryos, there are specialized techniques known as ICSI and PICSI that contribute to achieving this.

ICSI and PICSI, for male infertility

ICSI is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Microinjection, a technique that consists of extracting a sperm from a semen sample or through a testicular biopsy, to help select the most suitable sperm.

And for its part, PICSI, is the technique designed to improve the practice of Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), in which a single sperm is selected and injected into the egg to achieve fertilization, which makes it possible to choose a Competent sperm based on their ability to bind to hyaluronic acid, the main component of the cells that surround the egg.

Both techniques are implemented at Ingenes to guarantee the best results in In Vitro Fertilization treatments.
